À la bibliothèque (Fill-in-the-blanks kwiz)

Bonjour Madame Cécile !

While attempting this exercise on Le Subjonctif Présent, I had queries in the following sentence->

1. J'étais comme votre fils, jusqu'à ce qu'un jour, j'aille dans la bibliothèque de mon quartier,et que je me mette à dévorer les romans “Donjons & Dragons.

In this sentence, Madame, why is the Subjonctif used in the second blank ? Can’t it be “je me mets” ?

2. Oui, et j'ai peur que cela ne lui fasse un peu peur.

Here, Madame, why does Mme. Aurélie use “cela”  instead of “il” when referring to a Harry Potter novel ?

Merci encore Madame !

Bonne journée!

Hi Shrey,

Thank you for your good wishes...

1. Jusqu'à ce que applies to both verbs, hence, 'se mettre' is in the subjunctive.

2. Depends on the context but on in a stand-alone sentence,  'cela' is more correct but 'il' wouldn't be incorrect in a passage if it referred directly to the said book.

Hope this helps!

Re-bonjour Madame Cécile !

Thank you for helping me out.

Just needed a clarification->You say that “Jusqu’à ce que” applies to both verbs.

Is the second “que” an indication of the above-mentioned line ?

Secondly, though this exercise was designed to test Le Subjonctif Présent, but I just wanted to reassure my learning->

The sentence “ J'étais comme votre fils, jusqu'à ce qu'un jour, j'aille dans la bibliothèque de mon quartier,et que je me mette à dévorer les romans “Donjons & Dragons.” uses Le Subjonctif Présent in both the cases because ->

The narrator’s state of being like the woman’s son just ended once he started visiting the library and began to read the book.

Hi Shrey,

It is precisely because of the repetition of the 'que'.

So, Madame, it means that since “que” has been repeated, Le Subjonctif Présent has been used twice and not Le Subjonctif Passé ?

Hi Shrey,

The actions are considered as simultaneous so the same tense is used.
