ive obviously missed something, but why do we need les here when tous means all (ofthem)?

Il les a lus -- He read them.
Il a lu tous les livres. -- He read all the books.
Il les a tous lus. -- He read them all.

Hi Carol,

Let's look at this another way. Il les a lus -- He has read them. "les" being the direct object pronoun.

To add a bit more information -- Did he read them all or just some of them?

He actually read them all -- "Il les a tous lus"
