Is garde-robe an acceptable alternative?

Hi Andrew,

The word has probably changed its meaning over time but nowadays -

'l'armoire' is the piece of furniture where you put away your clothes and 'la garde-robe' is the whole of the clothes you wear and not the furniture.

Thank you.  Wardrobe still carries both meanings in English.
