Use of indirect object

Hi, I hope you can help with a grammar question. I'm doing a writing exercise: C1 Camping in the Woods. The phrase: "The invigorating wind lashed her face Translated" as "Le vent vivigant lui foullait le visage" I infer that "lui" is added to clarify that the wind is not "whipping its own face". The exception doesn't seem to be covered in the Kwizbot grammar notes (at least as far as I can see). Kind regards, Glen
